A short but compelling story. The Recruit is a short novella that presents a new twist on vampires – at least it was a new twist for me. In this story vampires are somewhat benevolent beings who recruit new “members” only when they are needed to fill out their ranks. They also don’t have to hide during daylight hours. Phillip is dying and Albert wants to recruit him and thereby save his life. After Phillip agrees he has to go through quite a bit of training. Since this is a short-ish story I don’t want to say too much and give away too many details; the blurb does a good job of describing the story. I had only one minor concern with The Recruit. The term blood-mate was introduced but never fully explained. From the way it was used I gathered that it is something comparable to the term fated-mate as used in shifter stories, but a bit more explanation about it would have been appreciated. I found The Recruit to be different and interesting and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It’s no
