Special Weather Statement, eleven A.M. Thursday: A wildfire has broken out near Route 93 south of the city of Boulder. Due to high winds the fire is rapidly spreading east. All residents of Superior should evacuate immediately.

The wind almost knocked Jake down as he exited the administration building. He’d heard it whistling at the windows while he was in the president’s office, but he had no idea that it had picked up this much. He struggled toward his truck, forcing the door open as it blew shut against him numerous times before he managed to get himself inside. He buckled his seatbelt and looked out the windshield. There was smoke on the southern horizon.

Jake was an easterner and was completely unacquainted with the dangers of western wildfires. He didn’t think too much about it. But as he drove closer, heading toward the highway to Denver, he could see that it was a very large fire. And it occurred to him that, with this wind, that was a very bad thing.

He reached his exit off the highway and found it blocked by police cars. He leaned out the window to inquire about an alternate route home.

“We’re not letting anyone into Superior,” the officer told him. “That fire’s bearing down on the town pretty fast. Everyone’s been told to evacuate immediately.”

“Can I turn around and head back toward Boulder?” Jake asked.

“Yeah, you’re safest in that direction. You got family in Superior?”

Jake nodded.

“They’ll be okay as long as they get out fast,” the officer said.

Jake turned the truck around and exited at the first road that was still open. He called Chip.

No answer.

Frantically, he looked for another route home using the GPS on his phone. Not being a local, he wasn’t familiar with any of the back roads. He’d always gone home the same way. Finding an alternate route, he took off in that direction.

And promptly found another police cruiser blocking the route.

Twice more he tried with the same results. He could see the smoke was a lot closer now.

And there was a lot more of it.
