Rachel can’t find the right woman. She’s trying to escape her past, where she worked at a pizza place and messed around with her married boss, Rhiannon. One night they start to have sex but are busted by Rhiannon’s husband, and Rachel decides to leave her behind for good. On another night, she goes home with cute waitress Jen, who starts kissing her, but there is a drunken guy avidly watching and Rachel is once again unsatisfied.

Then Rachel meets the tall, muscular, lesbian at her new job named AJ. Rachel wonders if she’s finally met someone like her. She finds out AJ is fresh out of a break-up, but they still have a night out at the bar, playing pool and singing karaoke. Is this just going to be another night with an emotionally unavailable woman, or will the spark of something more ignite? At the very least, will Rachel end the night feeling less alone?

We drove a few blocks away to a bar I’d seen but never been to before called Greg’s.

“This is just a place my friends and I go to sing karaoke sometimes,” she said.

“Are they going to be here tonight?” I asked.

“I don’t know. Maybe.”

But when we got in the bar, there weren’t many people. We ordered a couple beers, and sat far away from the stage, where a guy and girl were badly singing a song I didn’t even recognize.

“Have you ever been to a gay bar?” I asked.

“Yeah, lots of times,” she answered. “But I got tired of the people I met there. I might take you sometime, but trust me, the people our age are a big clique. It can be a good experience, but it’s not everything.”

“Oh.” I said. “Sometimes I just feel so alone. I don’t know any gay people in my town. And around here I only seem to meet bisexual women who prefer men. You’re the first actual lesbian I’ve met in about a year. The last one I met moved out of state.”

“That’s too bad. I’ve got a few friends I can introduce you to. Single ones, too.”

“What ... what about you? Are you single?”

AJ nodded. “Yeah but I’m not really on the market right now. My ex just left me three months ago and honestly I’m holding out hope to get her back. But when I met you I thought maybe I could at least just have a good time with someone for a night.”

“Oh, I see. Yet another non-available woman. Just what I needed. But still, maybe you could at least teach me a thing or two.”

AJ smiled. “Maybe. You want to play pool?”

“Sure.” As the karaoke couple horribly ended their song, AJ and I walked to an empty table and I put in two quarters. AJ and I played a couple games, and we were pretty evenly matched. We drank a couple more beers, some Jager bombs, and then braved the karaoke machine and discovered we both liked the same music. We sang a horrible duet, and then sat down to drink more beer in victory.

“I like you, you’re refreshing,” she said.

“Do you want to play cards at my apartment?” I asked. “We’ll take some more drinks there.”

“Sounds good.” We bought some carry-out beer, AJ took me to my car, then followed me to my place.

I was nervous. I hadn’t had anyone at my apartment in a long time. When we got to my place I turned on some music. AJ exclaimed in delight at my six-foot tall bookshelf and looked over all my books, asking if she could borrow one, which I allowed. Then we sat at the coffee table in my living room, and I dealt the cards. We played Blackjack, Speed, and Rummy. I had a little bit of vodka left in my cabinet so we took a couple shots. Then we danced together to the music for a while, and when AJ put her arms around my waist I leaned in and kissed her. When she kissed me back, I had to know:

“Is this just for tonight?”
